The natural substance nepetalactone, contained in mint, acts on the cat's brain and triggers a kind of "high" state, which is accompanied by an increase in activity and well-being. Many cats become more relaxed, happy and agile, which can help reduce stress and relieve boredom. It's an excellent way to motivate your cat to exercise, play and gain more energy. Especially for indoor cats, catnip is a great opportunity to make everyday life a little more exciting and to awaken their natural instincts.

The effects of catnip can vary greatly from cat to cat. While some cats are literally "intoxicated" by the scent, others show no reaction at all. Young cats and seniors in particular are usually less susceptible to the intoxicating effect, while many sexually mature cats, especially male cats, react more strongly to it - regardless of whether they are neutered or not.

About a third of cats remain completely unimpressed by catnip. This appears to be a genetic predisposition in which the gene responsible for the "catnip response" is either missing or inactive. Check in advance whether your cat reacts to the scent in general.

Is catnip harmful to cats?

Catnip is neither toxic nor addictive and has no harmful side effects. However, it should not be used too often or in large quantities so as not to overwhelm your cat's sensitive nose.

Catnip should only be offered in small quantities and not too often so as not to overstimulate your cat.
